A first look at Google Sites has gotten me past my initial skepticisms that a unversial content management system would be anything but minimalistic cookie cutter style. I am now stuck at a resounding "It depends" as always when taste, design and uniform are involved. But and that is a great step forward it's very easy to use, has a great deal of flexibility and solves a lot of problems of the web content producers in the world. If a business is just starting out and wants to get something online quickly and easily, without a lot of fuss, it's well advised to use Google Apps of which Google Sites is a part of.

The only hurdle is getting the domain set up right. You still need to get past the gatekeepers of the registrars and the dns minotaurs, which have cornered the markets and I have an axe to grind since about 1995 when the marketers started to get greedy and protective and arrogant. But well, we all need to get past that every day one way or other, every profession has a set of those people in it...Big sigh.

Good for fast file and data sharing, but a bit cumbersome as it doesn't follow learned User Interface. You get started quickly which gets you past the initial fear to learn yet another program, however it's hard to leave the work tools and fast access to your own desktop application behind
All the hype about the desktop is dead, long live the Internet is a bit too hype. Processing and update speed and feature are lacking, most of the advanced features that I have grown accustomed to in the last 15 - 20 years since I outgrew Multiplan 3.0 are missing.
